Firefighters had to use cutting gear and stabilisation equipment to rescue people trapped following a collision on the westbound carriageway of the M62 between junctions 20 (Rochdale) and 19 (Heywood/Middleton) on Sunday evening.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) also attended and treated multiple casualties.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: "At 6.08pm on Sunday 3 September, three fire engines from Heywood and Rochdale were joined by two Technical Response Units from Ashton at a road traffic collision with persons trapped on the M62 westbound between junctions 20 (Rochdale) and 19 (Heywood/Middleton).

"Firefighters assisted colleagues from NWAS with multiple casualties at the scene and remained there for around an hour and 40 minutes."
