Heywood Merchant Navy Day flag raising

Date published: 04 September 2017

Heywood Township raised the Red Ensign on Friday to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Merchant Navy in the second world war.

Councillor Peter Rush said: "Without them this country would have starved to death and we would been flying a different flag.

“30,000 seamen lost their lives during that conflict, a proportional death rate greater than all the armed services.

“At the time they enjoyed very little public recognition. That is why we should honour them one day of the year.

“We were honoured to have active seaman, Jim Fryer, attend our service.”
