A bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on Friday afternoon after an artillery shell was found in Sudden Brook, adjoining Exmouth Street in Rochdale.
The shell was discovered by a resident who contacted the bomb squad and Councillor Lynne Brosnan, and sent photos to her.
Councillor Brosnan told Rochdale Online: “It is a shame because it dates from the early 1900s and there was nothing salvageable. It is a wonder it had not gone off already because it had corroded.
“It is amazing that it had been there for over 100 years. It was moved for the explosion and covered in sandbags, so it wasn’t a huge one.”
Residents were watching events outside a 100 metre cordon that was put in place, but no homes were evacuated. Following the controlled explosion the hole that was left was filled by the Council.
