Aquabears to be first users of newly opened Castleton Swimming Pool

Date published: 29 August 2017

Aquabears are set to be the first users when Castleton Swimming Pool reopens on Monday 4 September.

They will be followed a week later by local schools on 11 September with the clubs and general public accessing the pool by mid-September.

This transition it to allow a smooth return to the full operations of the facility, with more pool time given to the general public - a requirement of the agreed lease.

The pool was saved from closure after the Council agreed to a community asset transfer to Crewe Industrial on 1 August, and will be named Castleton Leisure Centre Limited.

Even though the pool, which is over 100-years-old, was a well-used facility by Aquabears, Starfish, Castleton Swimming Club, and several local schools, the threat of closure was very real, especially after the presence of deadly legionella in the showers forced the baths to close in May and December last year. Replacing the pipework and making the pool safe would have cost in the region of £120,000.

Since then, workmen from Crewe Industrial have been working to solve the problems that caused the closure of the baths at the beginning of this year, with the aim to get be up and running for the beginning of September. This now has been achieved and important safety checks made.

Ongoing improvements will continue to take place whilst the pool is in use to make a better and more attractive facility for all who use it.
