Whitworth Community High School student Alex Lord is among the top three per cent of students in the country to achieve a Grade 9 in Maths. He also gained 11 GCSEs with A*s in Music, Physics and Religious Studies and As in Chemistry, Biology and Food Technology.

The 16-year-old said: “I am going to Rochdale Sixth Form where I will be studying Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths and I would like to go into a career involving scientific research.

“I didn’t expect to do as well in my Maths and I was in a bit of a state of shock when I opened the envelope.

“I was most surprised about my Physics result because I thought I was going to get a B and I got an A* and I didn’t expect to do as well in Biology.”

Excellent GCSE results have set Head Prefect Elle Gregson-Howorth on her way to a career as a vet.

Elle, from Whitworth Community High School, gained a Grade 8 in Maths, A* in Business Studies and As in Religious Studies, Food Technology, PE. Geography, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Even though the 16-year-old said she has always been ok at Maths she was really pleased with her results.

Her next stop is BRGS Sixth Form where she will be taking Biology, Chemistry, Maths and PE before going training to be a veterinary and she hopes to specialise in equine or agriculture.

She said: “I have three horses and I used to compete, before studying for my GCSEs and my parents have land that is rented for sheep and cows so I am used to dealing with animals.

“I am looking forward to being able to specialise in subjects at a greater depth. Being Head Prefect has been good for me because it has really built up my confidence.”

Outstanding English exam results saw 16-year-old Rebecca Harrison achieving a Grade 9 in English Language and Grade 7 in English Literature.

The 16-year-old also gained 11 GCSEs at grades A* to C and also got an A in Art.

She said: “I think I would like to do something in English but I don’t want to be a teacher. I have made lots of friends at Whitworth and a lot of them are also coming with me to the Sixth Form College.”

Head Prefect at Whitworth Community High School Charlie Hoyle achieved 10 A*s and As at GCSE and is on his way to becoming a police officer.

In Maths, English Literature and English Language he gained Grade 8 along with an A* in Religious Studies and As in History, Spanish, PE, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Charlie, 16, said: “I didn’t expect to do this well and it was a shock to get the Biology result. I knew I had done well but I didn’t expect it to be as good as that.

“The last five years at Whitworth have been a good laugh and I was proud to be Head Prefect. I have enjoyed being able to help to deliver the school ethos.”

At Rochdale Sixth Form he will be studying A levels in Law, Psychology and PE and then plans to go straight into the police force.

Motocross loving teen Leonni Tighe celebrated being second in the British Championships just weeks before collecting her GCSE results.

The Whitworth Community High School student has been riding Motocross bikes since she was five and has just completed her first year as a senior, against much older and more experienced riders.

She is hoping her success will lead to a sponsorship deal that will help with the costs of her chosen hobby.

Leonni, 16, was delighted when she collected her results to find out that she had gained two As in Performing Arts and ICT, two Bs and three Cs.

She said: “It was very hard for me because I was focusing on my Motocross while also studying for my GCSEs at the same time.

“I have now been picked for Team GB and will be competing in Europe. I never expected to do as well in my first year in the senior competition because I was one of the youngest people taking part against competitors aged up to 27.

“I am going on to a place at Hopwood Hall College where I will be studying Sports Science, while also keeping up with my Motocross.”

A future counsellor was delighted to be among the top three per cent of students for both English Language and English Literature.

Beth Hall, 16, gained Grade 9s in both subjects along with As in Religious Studies, Performing Arts, Geography and IT.

She said: “I am going on to Rochdale Sixth Form to study Psychology, Sociology and Maths and want to be a counsellor eventually, but first I would like to see the world before I am too tied down.

“I loved it when I went skiing with Whitworth because I had never done anything like that and I would like to be a ski rep.”

Student Natalie Jeppesen made the most progress of any Whitworth Community High School student.

The 16-year-old gained an A* in Art, As in Computing and Religious Studies and Grade 7 in English Literature.

She said: “My dream would be to become an animator and work for Disney and I am going on to Burnley College where I am doing A level English Literature, Art and Design.

“I thought I had only got a C in Religious Studies but I got an A and I am thrilled to bits with my results.”

Headteacher Gill Middlemas said: “We are delighted that the hard work of students and staff has enabled our young people to achieve some excellent outcomes and ensure that they are well placed for success post-16.

“We have seen some outstanding individual successes with regards to both attainment and progress and there was a great atmosphere in school today as students collected their results, celebrated with staff and were able to confirm their destinations.

“I would like to thank staff and students for their endeavours and thank governors, parents and carers for their vital support.”
