Six to take on Three Peaks Challenge for SKT Welfare

Date published: 15 August 2017

Sohail Ahmed, Saqlain Khalid, Asif Nazir, Dan and Zulf Ahmed, and Adeel Khalid are aiming to raise £1,500 for SKT Welfare by taking on the tallest mountains in Great Britain in just 24 hours.

The team – made up of staff members from Rochdale Sixth Form College, Kashmir Youth Project, Oak Properties and Keele University - will be undertaking the Three Peak Challenge between 26 and 27 August, tackling the tallest mountains within each representative country: Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in England and Ben Nevis in Scotland.

A popular misconception is that the three mountains that form the challenge are the three tallest on the British mainland, but over one hundred peaks in Scotland are higher than Scafell Pike, and 56 higher than Snowdon.

Snowdon (1,085 metres) has many paths with varying difficulty. Most Three Peaks Challengers will follow either the Pyg Track or Miners Track, leaving from the Pen-y-Pass car park.

Whilst Scafell Pike has several paths, most Three Peaks Challengers will begin at Wasdale Head, to the North of Wast Water. The tallest mountain in England, Scafell Pike is the smallest of the three at just 978 metres.

Unlike Snowdon and Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis - the highest of the three peaks at 1,345 metres – has one main path starting close to sea level, meaning much greater vertical ascent.

SKT Welfare is a UK-registered charity, founded in 2008, dedicated to the delivery of humanitarian aid and solutions regardless of race, political affiliation, gender or belief. Its aim is to help relieve the suffering of the world’s poorest communities.

Since its inception, the charity has accomplished several projects in the UK, Pakistan, India, Morocco, Somalia and more recently, Palestine. However, since 2011 and the onset of the crisis in Syria, SKT Welfare has re-oriented most of its efforts addressing the humanitarian fallout from this conflict, and has become instrumental in delivering aid to Syrians in need, both inside Syria and within refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

The charity has evolved and adapted itself successfully to what is an extremely difficult conflict zone to function within, operationally and logistically.
