Councillors Daniel Meredith and Liam O’Rourke awarded medals for 10 years of service for Salford Diocese Lourdes Pilgrimage

Date published: 04 August 2017

Councillors Daniel Meredith and Liam O'Rourke were amongst several individuals awarded 10-year service medals this week as part of the Salford Diocese Lourdes Pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage, which has been running for 85 years, helps take elderly and disabled people from Salford Diocese to the renowned pilgrimage site in the south of France.

Councillor O'Rourke, of North Heywood, who assists with personal care and moving and handling, said: "Being in Lourdes and helping out some fantastic people from across the Salford Diocese really is the most humbling experience. It really hammers home the hard work carers have to do year round and all respect must go to them."

Councillor Daniel Meredith, of Balderstone and Kirkholt, who volunteers as a nurse whilst in Lourdes, added: "Lourdes gives many sick and elderly people a chance during the year to get away and get some respite which is exceptionally good for them and their wellbeing."

Both councillors go with the St. Christopher's group who take over 18 volunteers from across the Salford Diocese.

If anyone is interested in making the pilgrimage in summer 2018, contact Liam on 07986 555 396.
