Rochdale Online has received a letter for addressed only to ‘Peter (Percy) Proctor, WWII Spitfire Veteran, Rochdale’.

Posted on 31 July with a Sheffield postmark, there is no return address on the envelope.

Peter is believed to be the veteran Spitfire pilot from Southport, who hit headlines across Liverpool in 2014 after parachuting for the very first time at the age of 92, having never used one during his time in the Royal Air Force.

He joined the RAF at just 19 years old in 1942 and upon completing Pilot training served with 11 and 41 Sqns on both Hurricanes and Spitfires. He flew in Burma on ground attack roles supporting the 14th Army before moving to India. He was awarded the Burma Star.

He ended his career in the armed forces in 1946, returning to his job as a store keeper. He also drove lorries for 33 years.

Peter appeared at the Aces High Gallery Event in Aylesbury in on Saturday 19 November last year, as a one of the Battle of Britain and RAF Fighter Command veterans. He is described as a Warrant Officer who was awarded the Burma Star.

He was married to Olive for 56 years before she passed away around 10 years ago. The 2002 electoral roll lists an Olive and Peter Proctor as living in Ormskirk, although it is unknown if they are the same Proctors.
