Firgrove flower frenzy

Date published: 27 July 2017

Firgrove is looking fabulous following a makeover of a weed-strewn community garden.

The neglected patch of land off Rochdale Road has benefited from a dazzling display of plants and flowers as part of impressive works.

The spruce-up will also include new walls, paving and seating area for locals.

Councillor John Blundell, who organised the work and secured the cash from the council's Pennine Township committee, said: "Firgrove is a great little place and we are really proud of our village, but the community garden was looking in a sorry state and in need of a bit of tender loving care.

"Now it’s looking really smart with all the flowers and a real credit to the council staff who have done a fantastic job.

"Next up is some new paving and repairs to the stonework and walls.

"It has been money well spent."

Ian Chadwick, chairman of Friends of Firgrove, said: "Our small band of volunteers are working hard make it a lot cleaner and greener round here.

“The garden is now our stunning centrepiece and this week the local shops are putting up hanging baskets to add even more colour to the village.

“We'd like to thank Councillor Blundell for all his support and getting us the grants to pay for the improvements."
