The Norden Heritage Project has moved a step forward with plans to restore the historic site of Moss Row, following a generous donation of traditional Norden cobblestones.

200 cobbles have been donated to the project by local residents, Steve and Sushma Davison, who reluctantly had to lift them as part of renovation works at their home. The Davisons were sad to see them go but said that they were pleased to have been able to donate enough to enable restoration works to be carried out on Moss Row, which is acknowledged as a significant heritage feature within the village.

Councillor Peter Winkler, who set up the project, said: “The Norden Heritage Project is a major, long term initiative to identify, restore and protect the many built and natural heritage features which make our village and the surrounding areas so special.

"We are very lucky to have received such a kind donation and I can’t thank Steve and Sushma enough for their generosity. I was delighted when they agreed to donate the cobblestones, as using locally sourced materials makes the restoration of Moss Row all the more in-keeping with the projects goals.

"We  have already got support to get the stones professionally set so I am looking forward to seeing the old road brought back to its former glory.”

The restoration of Moss Row is a significant part of the project as it will form an entrance to the New Woodland Heritage Trail which will run throughout the woodland and into Greenbooth and Ashworth.

As well as encouraging more people to enjoy the beautiful scenery, the project is also creating a trail of discovery which will highlight many heritage features along the routes.

Councillor Winkler added: “I have had some very positive conversations with rangers, council officers and other heritage organisations who love the plans that the project is setting out and are keen to support different schemes along the journey.”

The Norden Heritage Project will also take in other schemes ,including planting and maintenance works at the Norden war memorial which is now a grade two listed monument, restoration of old street signs, and seeking formal status and appropriate protection for much of Norden’s built heritage.
