St John Ambulance saving lives since 1877

Date published: 10 July 2017

St John Ambulance was founded 140 years on 10 July 1877 to create a nation of life savers. Established over 70 years before the NHS, the first aid charity has helped millions of people through delivering and teaching the simple, yet incredibly important, skill of first aid.

Created by The Order of St John, it originally had the dual aim of training people in ‘First Aid to the Injured’ and the distribution of ambulance equipment.

Since 1877, St John Ambulance has trained hundreds of thousands of people in the workplace, schools and wider community, alongside providing first aid at some of the nation’s most memorable historical events, and supporting the emergency services during times of war, terror and social unrest.

For 140 years – from Victorian times to the present day – St John Ambulance has played a major role in saving lives, and its work continues.

With the help of public support, St John Ambulance wants to continue this vital work, focusing on enabling the next generation to grow up with the essential skills to save a life to ensure no one dies because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.
