Following the concern of residents and councillors at the prospect of hazardous substances being stored in Castleton by Tetrosyl, the company has moved to provide reassurance about the "rigorous" health and safety systems that will be in place.

A spokesman for Tetrosyl said: "We at Tetrosyl take health and safety very seriously and our warehouse will be kitted out with sophisticated safety systems which cover every eventuality. We are currently working with the Health and Safety Executive, the Environment Agency and the Local Authority to ensure that they are satisfied that our control measures adhere to the current British Standards and going forward there will be regular inspections every year.
"Before the warehouse becomes operational we will have in place rigorous health and safety systems and procedures to reduce the likelihood of an incident to a minimum level, there are segregated secure areas for the storage of aerosols and flammable products, and the warehouse has been fitted with state-of-the-art CCTV, intruder alarms, automated fire detection and a sprinkler system that cover the whole warehouse and throughout the racking system. In addition to this, we are putting in place detailed emergency procedures which each member of staff will be fully trained in. Security is also provided on the site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"Tetrosyl has recently relocated our head office to Newgate House in the heart of Rochdale Town Centre, investing millions of pounds in the refurbishment of the building bringing 150 jobs to the town and forming partnerships with local colleges and training establishments. We are an active part of the Rochdale Place Board and are committed to improving the town and the prospects of its people to create a brighter future for the local area.
"Further to the above we also have plans to bring our main warehousing and distribution centre to Rochdale bringing a further 200 jobs to the area. Our current warehouse has been successfully operating in Chadderton for 10 years, with approximately 18,500 pallets spaces. However, due to our expansion we have simply outgrown our current space. Our plan is to transform the old Woolworths warehouse from a derelict site to a state-of-the-art modern distribution centre which has circa 40,000 pallet spaces. Part of the warehouse will also house a four level, semi-automatic, fully conveyored, single pick and pack area, which allows us to create a next day delivery service to our trade customers. The plan for this site is to store products which are manufactured at our other sites, all of which will be finished retail goods, which are stored in individual containers. For the avoidance of any doubt there will be no storage whatsoever of raw materials or hazardous waste (or indeed any chemical waste) at this site."
