Spot the smoke free giant daisy

Date published: 06 March 2006

Giant 12ft daisies will line the streets around Rochdale Borough marking the town’s campaign of working towards becoming a smoke free borough.

10 Daisies will be planted around the Town in different locations and we are challenging Rochdale residents to spot as many blooms as they can.

Anyone can take part in ‘Bloom Spotting’ and be in with the chance of winning a £40.00 garden centre voucher.

The game is easy, all you have to do is; confirm the locations of four daisies and submit your answers along with your name, address and telephone number to:

Closing Date: 17 March 2005

Rochdale Primary Care Trust and Rochdale Council have bought the daisies as a symbol of promoting fresh, clean air.

Gary Parkinson, senior environmental health officer, said “The daisy is a recognisable symbol which will hopefully raise awareness of the campaign in the run up to No Smoking Day and there after.

“I would like to encourage the Rochdale population to take pride in their new flowers which will certainly brighten the area and urge them to enter the competition, for the unique opportunity to enjoy a meal in a smokeless atmosphere.”

Dr Sheila Will, Director of Public Health for Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton PCT added, “The Daisies continue the success of the scheme that was launched in Manchester last year. I hope businesses in the borough follow in the footsteps of the Council and PCT’s by implementing smoke free policies, banning smoking in all public places and grounds to protect our health.”

Businesses and organisations have sponsored some of the daisies showing support for the initiative and signifying their smoke free status or commitment to becoming completely smoke free.  J.D. Wetherspoons, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Rochdale Online are amongst the sponsors.  If anyone is interested in sponsoring a daisy or pledging their support please contact 01706 864638.

Once the campaign is over, the 10 original daisies will be donated to local schools who have pledged to be smoke free to ensure the no smoking message reached young people and encourage schools to communicate smoke free regulations.
