Conservative and Lib Dem budget proposals rejected

Both the Conservative and Lib Dem budget proposals were rejected by councillors at Wednesday's Budget Fixing Council.

Leader of the Conservatives, Councillor Ashley Dearnley proposed:

  • An extra £1 million into potholes on top of Labour’s £2 million
  • Reducing the number of council portfolio holders
  • Scrapping the posts of assistant portfolio holders
  • Councillors’ teas should be paid for out of their allowances
  • Withdrawal of funding provided to trades unions

Leader of the Lib Dem, Councillor Andy Kelly proposed:

  • Reduce the number of cabinet and assistant cabinet members
  • Protect poorest with a 3% cap on council tax bands A, B and C
  • Protect services most vulnerable
  • Continue to invest in broken roads
  • Address ‘sickness culture’ and agency workers
