Royal Oldham League of Friends donation to hospital’s acute medical unit

The Royal Oldham Hospital League of Friends has donated 16 drip stands, furniture including settees and side tables for the relatives’ room and £500 for the purchase of pictures for the 16 side wards on the acute medical unit (AMU) at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

Alison Brierley, acting sister on the AMU, said: “We would like to thank The Royal Oldham Hospital League of Friends for their kind donations which have made a huge difference to the care of patients and the experience of relatives coming to visit the unit.

“We have bought some lovely outdoor scenes to brighten up the walls of the side rooms. As the walls used to be bare, the canvas pictures are a lovely focal point for our patients, many of whom are acutely ill.”

The League of Friends visited the AMU to view their purchases. Rose Hall, said: “We are really happy to have brought some pleasure to the patients with our donations. We are striving to help patients, visitors and staff at The Royal Oldham Hospital and we are always looking for new projects in which to do this.”

The acute medical unit is a 48 bed assessment unit for acutely ill adult patients, who have either presented in the emergency department at the hospital or have been referred directly by their GP.

Patients are assessed, treated and stabilised on AMU, with most patients discharged within 12-24 hours. Some will then be admitted on to general medical or specialty wards such as cardiology or respiratory medicine for on-going treatment, and other short stay patients will remain on the AMU for up to 72 hours, before being discharged home. The unit sees around 10,390 patients per year.
