Staff member hospitalised after armed robbery at Iceland store

A member of staff was hospitalised after being attacked during an armed robbery at Iceland on Well I’Th’ Lane on Monday morning (23 January).

One member of staff was in a side yard when she was approached by the two robbers, who covered their faces with scarves.

The first, armed with a hammer, forced the staff member on to the shop floor and dragged her into the office.

The second offender, armed with a knife, went into the office and demanded that another member of staff open the safe, before he struck him to the head with the knife handle and punched him in the ribs.

The offenders stole a quantity of cash and forced both members of staff into a cleaner’s cupboard, before they fled.

North West Ambulance confirmed a patient had been taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital.

A spokesperson for Iceland said: “We can confirm an incident occurred in our Rochdale store. As it is a police matter we are unable to comment any further.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Anyone with information contact police on 101 and quote the reference number 348 of 23/01/17."
