First Middleton Scouts and Explorer Scouts trip to the battlefields of the Somme

Date published: 05 November 2016

First Middleton Scouts and Explorer Scouts visited the battlefields of the Somme as part of their Somme centenary project.

Jon Gillibrand, First Middleton Scouts and Explorer Scouts, said: “Each Scout was given the name of a Middleton man who fell at the Somme and we found their names recorded on the walls at the Thiepval Monument to the Missing.

“The Middleton Branch of the Royal British Legion provided us with crosses to place for each man, along with a wreath.

“We also took their flag with us and flew it with pride at the service.

“We were looked after and hosted by a French Scout group who took great care of us and even introduced us to the mayor - which got our photo in the paper the very next day.

“We received many comments about how well our young people did and were told how proud we should be of them.

“It is important that people see what the youth of Middleton are capable of and the great things they can achieve.”
