Firefighters launch Fireworks Code video for Bonfire Night

Firefighters in Greater Manchester have created a fireworks code video for bonfire night. The 50 second video shows people exactly how to handle fireworks safely taking people through every step of the code.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service Station Manager, Paul Duggan, features in the film with local children whose bonfire night almost takes a turn for the worse.

Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, Councillor David Acton, said: “We always recommend people go to an organised fireworks display, but we realise lots of people will be having their own displays in gardens across Greater Manchester.

“If you do one thing before setting off fireworks in your garden watch our video and understand the fireworks code – it take less than a minute.

“Taking simple steps like having a bucket of water at hand, wearing gloves and using a taper to light your fireworks will make sure your night goes off with the right kind of bang.

Firework Safety Code:

• Buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or CE
• Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and use them one at a time
• Read and follow the instructions on each firework
• Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back
• Keep naked flames, including cigarettes away from fireworks
• Never return to a firework once it has been lit
• Never put fireworks in pockets or throw them
• Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
• Keep a bucket of water nearby at all times
• Alcohol and fireworks do not mix and may lead to injury
• Keep pets indoors
