Date published: 18 December 2007
Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust has signed up to the Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) campaign charter to give families with disabled children more help and support.
By signing up to the Charter, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale PCT have pledged to achieve specific objectives in relation to the support offered to disabled children by January 2009.
Steve Broach, Campaign Manager for Every Disabled Child Matters, said: "The campaign team are delighted that Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale PCT has signed up to our Primary Care Trust Charter. Families with disabled children will see this as a real sign of political commitment to disabled children in the area. They will look forward to seeing work put in place to achieve the objectives in the Charter by January 2009."
"The Every Disabled Child Matters campaign is fighting for rights and justice for every disabled child and we’re proud to be a part of it," said John Pierce, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale PCT chairman. "Disabled children, young people and their families have been left out for too long. EDCM is the campaign to put this right. We want all disabled children and their families to have the right to the services and support they need to live ordinary lives."
Primary care trusts are responsibile for delivering health services to families with disabled children. As many as 1 in 5 families in the Rochdale borough have a disabled child.
Commitments in the Charter include:
- Identifying a children’s lead with specific responsibility for disabled children
- Demonstrating effective partnerships with local authority partners and adult service providers
- Training all staff in disability equality
EDCM’s PCT Charter follows the success of the campaign’s Local Authority Charter, which has been signed by 50 local authorities in England including Oldham PCT, Bury PCT and Stockport PCT.
