Win for Rochdale Residents in Recycling Draw

Date published: 20 September 2005

Four residents from Rochdale Council have become the first to receive their prizes in a recycling competition sponsored by United Co-operatives and the Council.

The winners were Mrs Hall from Heywood, Joseph McLoughlin from Middleton, Gordon Lorimer from Milnrow and Mary Kent from Rochdale who each received a £50 voucher from United Co-operatives as well as a TV/DVD combi, (with a set of National Geographic DVD’s) from Rochdale Council.

The presentation took place at Sandbrook Park, the headquarters of United Co-operatives and was attended by the Mayor Councillor Ashley Dearnley, Mayoress Councillor Beryl Wright and Councillor Ann Metcalfe, portfolio holder for the Environment. Also in attendance were Tara Dumas and a recycling crew from Rochdale MBC.

Rochdale Council have entered into partnership with United Co-operatives that will see prizes awarded to 16 residents across the borough over a 12-month period. They will get the chance to compete for £50 vouchers, four times a year, by re-cycling their waste

The scheme works by measuring the tonnages recycled of glass or tins across the four townships. The prizes are then awarded to the households that have recycled the most in that period. Currently there are 40,000 green recycling boxes across the area.

The idea stemmed from Tara Dumas, who said:

“It is encouraging to see the thousands of people who took part in the prize draw.  In the period that the prize draw tickets were returned to us we saw a 15% increase in the number of households putting out their paper, cans and glass packaging for recycling.  The crews are now busier than ever collecting recycling from homes who are doing their bit for the environment and it is fantastic that United Co-operatives have given us the opportunity to reward some of them!”
