41st Rochdale Rainbows embark on food adventure with Tesco

Date published: 16 May 2016

A group of Rainbows from Shawclough/Healey discovered the fascinating journey behind the food on their plates during a special ‘behind the scenes’ visit to the Rochdale Tesco store last week.

The 41st Rochdale Rainbows, who meet at Thrum Hall Church, took part in a range of  activities including identifying different types of fish, discovering where our fruit and vegetables come from, and how a supermarket works – including a quick look in the store’s freezers.

The 18 girls were able to take part in the visit thanks to a partnership between Girlguiding and the Tesco Eat Happy project, designed to offer girls across the UK a unique insight into food production, sustainability and healthy eating.

Faye Denson, age six, said: “The trip was amazing – I loved the fresh bread and the fish was really slimy.”

Emily Allatt, age six, said: “I enjoyed the trip to Tesco – I loved making the hat.”

Rainbow Leader, Kelly Newbury added: “The visit to Tesco was fantastic. It was great to see the girls learning about where food comes from, and getting to taste lots of different foods too. They all loved going in the freezer.”

The Tesco Eat Happy Project compliments Girlguiding’s programme of activities for Rainbows (girls aged five to seven).

41st Rochdale Rainbows have been learning about food and its origins over the past 12 months and have taken part in exciting projects such as fruit picking, jam-making, bread-baking, and learning about bees and honey production.

After the visit to Tesco, Rainbows were awarded with their Farm to Fork special edition badge by the store’s Community Champion, Angela Hamer.
