REAG continue clean-up of Rochdale Canal

Date published: 16 May 2016

Members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG), working in Co-operation with Rhys Wynne, Co-ordinator of the Community Roots Project, Canal & River Trust, have been cleaning the canal for the last three consecutive Saturdays.

This Saturday they cleaned the canal from the Sandbrook Park to the Milkstone Road bridge.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE from REAG said: “The canal is a beautiful environment and a rich resource for the Borough of Rochdale.

"However, the amount of litter thrown into it makes the water a contaminated hazardous for birds and the ducks.

"REAG Members have taken out bicycles, trollies, cans, bags of litter, naans, chick peas, chappatis, etc. from the canal. There is also dog fouling on the bank of the canal.

"Unfortunately, those who are doing all these, are not showing respect to this beautiful resource, making the water contaminated for birds and ducks, making the water dirty and are affecting the environment of the canal.

“The Community Roots Project aims to improve the environment of the canal by cleaning it, trimming intruding branches, planting flowers on both banks of the canal and making it more environmental friendly.”
