Girl guides return from intrepid adventure
Date published: 07 May 2016
Girl Guides from Rochdale and Heywood have returned from an unforgettable adventure weekend, called ‘Guides off the Grid’ in Ormskirk – where they were challenged to switch off all technology and get back to basics, through a variety of different activities.
Together with their leaders, the girls from 32nd Rochdale Guides from Shawclough, 9th Heywood (St Luke’s) and 14th Heywood (Woodland) Guides, joined over 400 girls from across the North West for the ultimate outdoor challenge.
It was an action-packed weekend with a wide range of activities including; a high ropes course, climbing, abseiling, raft building, archery and orienteering.
The event culminated with a spectacular finale – an It’s-A-Knock-Out, giant inflatable assault course, complete with water pools and foam – in which girls competed in teams with new friends they had met over the weekend.
Amy Thulborn, aged 10 from 9th Heywood Guides, said: “The whole weekend was fab. I loved everything and made some new Guiding friends. The highlight was competing in It’s-A-Knock-Out.”
Imogen Zallman, aged 11, from 32nd Rochdale Guides, added: “I liked being challenged with the activities we did. It was a lot of fun and my favourite was the It’s-A-Knock-Out.”
Julie Bell, Region Chief Commissioner, said: “Guides off the Grid gave our girls from across the Region a fabulous opportunity to experience some great adventurous activities. The guides gained skills whilst having tons of fun and mayhem.”
Girlguiding gives girls and young women the chance to have fun, build friendships and make a positive difference in their community.
