Flag raised at Rochdale Town Hall for St George’s Day

Date published: 23 April 2016

Crowds gathered at Rochdale Town Hall today (Saturday 23 April) to take part in St George’s Day celebrations as the Mayor of Rochdale, Surinder Biant, raised the flag.

The ceremony began at 10am with the reading of a St George’s Day poem by Robin Parker followed by the Mayor raising the flag to celebrate the day of England’s patron saint.

Mayor Biant said: “St. George’s Day is a great occasion in our calendar and it is important that St George’s Day is celebrated throughout the country.

“It is great to see the town following the tradition of St. George’s Day.”

Saint Chad’s Parish Church also marked the occasion by ringing the church bells at 10:30am.

Following the flag-raising residents took tea and scones inside Rochdale Town Hall, before enjoying a day of free family activities, including face painting, balloon modelling and a St George’s Day-themed craft session at Touchstones.
