Calling All Nappy Changers!

Date published: 21 June 2005

Rochdale Council are joining the Real Nappy debate by promoting their use to mums in Heywood at a roadshow in the Market Hall on Friday 24 June 2005.

The stand will feature a variety of real nappies from a number of leading manufacturers and the first 20 mums who want to give real nappies a try will be given a FREE, (proof of address will be required) pack containing different types of nappy for them to use on their children. Advice will be available from 9.30am until 3.00pm.

Throughout the day there will also be demonstrations by Helen Bly a user of real nappies and mother of Elinor, a 7 month old girl. She will also be on hand to answer any questions that users may have as well as convincing ‘first time’ users! She will be joined on the stand by Stephen O’Neill of Rochdale Council who uses a laundry service for the real nappies of Jacob, his two month old son.

The event was the brainchild of Tara Dumas, the Waste Minimisation Manager at Rochdale MBC, who is keen to encourage residents to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill each year. She said:

“It has been estimated that families could save £475 over 2.5 years by switching from disposable to re-usable nappies! We currently throw away 2.8 billion disposable nappies in the UK every year, which is approximately 400,000 tonnes of rubbish. To meet our stringent waste disposal targets, we need to find a way to reduce the amount going into landfill which is why we are promoting an alternative.”
