Police Suspicious After Chemical Spillage
Date published: 20 June 2005
Chemical Drums
Police in Rochdale have found stacked up chemical drums in Littleborough that they believe were deliberately dumped there. The drums were all sealed but for one which was causing a spillage onto the road. They were blocking Blackstone Edge Old Road, Littleborough, when reports were sent to officers to investigate.
Officers went to the scene along with members of the fire and ambulance service. Blackstone Edge Old Road was closed from its junction with Halifax Road to its junction with Whittaker Lane and a 500-metre cordon was set up around the containers.
Specialist officers from the fire service attended and analysed the substances in the containers, which were found to be acetone and industrial dye. The containers were removed and Blackstone Edge Old Road was reopened. There were no evacuations and no injuries were reported.
The drums were found stacked up in the road and police think they were deliberately dumped there.
Anyone with any information about the containers is asked to contact police in Rochdale on 0161 856 8643 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
