Lucky escape as driver loses control of car

Date published: 08 April 2016

A driver had a lucky escape after his car flew over an embankment and crashed into a tree on Huddersfield Road, Newhey this afternoon (Friday 8 April).

Emergency services arrived at the scene at 1.00pm, after calls that the driver, who has a hearing impairment, lost control of his vehicle.

Despite the car tumbling down the embankment, the 32-year-old man managed to free himself from the vehicle and was helped by witness Mirella Natale, who sat with him until the ambulance arrived.

She said: “He did a 360 spin in the road and went flying down the embankment. He lost his hearing aid in the car and it was difficult to communicate with him at first, but it turned out he was on his way to pick up his kids. I’m just happy that he didn’t have them in the car.

“He seemed disorientated for a while but he managed to get out of the car himself. It could have been a lot worse.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers were called to the scene at exactly 1.00pm after calls that a silver Renault Megane had spun off the road.

“The man released himself from the vehicle and managed to get away with only minor injuries.”

He was taken to hospital.
