Walk of a lifetime for Littleborough Ladies

Date published: 04 April 2016

Hayley Jones, Nicholette Brady, Charlotte Maher and Becky Gibson of Littleborough Rugby Club walked a gruelling 50 miles from Blackpool to Littleborough tol raise funds for junior rugby at the club.

They completed the marathon walk in 19 hours and 12 minutes taking 107,997 or so steps in difficult conditions.

Becky Gibson siad: “We set off from Blackpool tower at 7.05pm and we marched through the night mainly on Preston Road and managed to reach the moors by dawn, unfortunately no beautiful sunrise was there to greet us but with the forecast at the time we were still lucky to get away with wind and light rain.

"Grane Road in Haslingden was a hike with no footpaths and we were really starting to tire.

"We pushed on over the Old Betts with very sore baby steps and gradually hobbled down into Rochdale.

"What we thought would be a celebratory moment was soon a deflated one when we could only just make out the tiny white windmill under the viaduct many miles away and realised although LRUFC was in sight in was not yet in reach.

“The messages we received encouraged us to carry on, we couldn't quite believe we made it to the canal in Firgrove and it was there when our rugby family started to join us in our final mile up to the club.

"The support we received from friends and family was overwhelming, they escorted us around the front of Hollingworth Lake and we had a fantastic turn out of members welcome us home with refreshments and immediate first aid on our poor feet.

“It was an painful but amazing experience, one of the most challenging days of our lives so far, and we could not have done it without each other of course, our drivers and the amazing encouragement and support from our friends and family.”
