Major canal side clean up

Date published: 11 March 2016

A major clean up operation is taking place on Littleborough canal.

Bob Furnell, who runs the Littleborough Canal Adoption Centre, said he plans to transform the canal side by re-levelling pebbles, cleaning up dirt and planting bright spring flowers along the fences to bring the area back to life.

Works have been taking place all week and will continue into the spring period.

Bob commented: “We have the go ahead from the council to get cleaning up, and it’s been amazing the stuff we’ve found. The sheer amount of things that people just dump in the water including bikes, brooms, parking barriers, not to mention all the littler and bottles you get floating around.

“We just want to make the place nice for the people of Littleborough, that’s what we’re about at the end of the day. The tougher jobs include re-levelling pebbles that have sunk with time, but it has already made a huge difference.

“Every single time I am down here I see at least one person throwing some rubbish into the water, there’s no need for it. We are looking forward to getting all cleaned up so we can start putting plants and flowers around as well. It is a beautiful place here and I just wish that people would look after it more.”
