Mayor joins REAG in cleaning for the Queen

Date published: 06 March 2016

The Mayor of the Borough of Rochdale, Surinder Biant, joined members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) to 'Clean Up for the Queen' around Rochdale Infirmary.

Clean for The Queen is a campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her Majesty the Queen's 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in June 2016. Clean for The Queen weekend was this weekend 4 - 6 March 2016.

It had been snowing since Friday and it was freezing in the morning with snow still on the streets, on the roads and footpath, but they cleaned the car park of the Infirmary, Whitehall Street, Quarry Street, Duke Street, Mooreland Street, Turner Street, Duke Street, Industry Street, Denton Street, Milford Street, Medley Street and Cronkeyshaw Road. They collected 14 bags of rubbish.

Next Saturday, REAG members will be joining the clean up in the Wardleworth area, which has been organised by the Rochdale Multifaith Partnership, Rochdale Council of Mosques and other organisations.

REAG members have thanked the Big Tidy, Keep Britain Tidy and Environment Management of Rochdale Borough Council for providing them with litter pickers, hoops, bags, etc., and thanked the Mayor Biant for his attendance and the Mayoress, Cecile Biant, for her support.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE said: “Collectively we can make Rochdale more beautiful, cleaner and greener. Let's spend a few minutes to clean around our properties every day, plant flowers in the open areas, keep our back alleys clean and make it safer for our children to play”.
