School Autism Awareness Week : 14 – 18 March

A programme of events which will raise awareness and celebrate autism has been devised to take place between Monday 14 – Friday 18 March. It will involve the opportunity for parents / carers to come into school and take part in activities. A programme of events for the week has been sent home today which will give you an opportunity to look at the programme in more detail. Please try and join in the activities on Thursday 17 March in the afternoon for a social event, have a coffee and meet other parents.

Parents Meeting: Proposed building extension

Parents / carers are invited to attend a meeting with the Project Manager, representatives from the local authority which will take place on Tuesday 22 March at 9.30am. The focus will be to provide an update on the timescale of the proposed building programme and the implications for the school. The Student Council and other Young Leaders will also be meeting with the team on Thursday 17 March at 2.00pm to find out about the plans and to ask questions in relation to the programme.

Spotlight on Safeguarding

This week the team`s focus is on `Racism` as part of our spotlight on safeguarding issues.

World Book Day

Various activities took place across the classes to celebrate World Book Day. This included sensory stories and activities linked to the creative curriculum.

Year 6 Transition – Redwood Orienteering.

It was great to see some of our Year 6 students who are transferring to Redwood in September take part in `Redwood Orienteering` by looking for clues around the school and meeting staff and visiting different classes.

Extended Schools Provision
Students can access after school clubs, youth clubs and a Saturday morning youth club and for more details please contact school. Names are now being taken for the Easter holiday club programme which will take place between Monday 4 – Friday 8 April.

KS5

Students at REEC have been taking turns to make pancakes. We are hoping to offer them in the student tuck shop at break time as part of our enterprise.
 
Paul has settled well into his new Internship role at Newlands School in Reception. He is working hard, enjoying himself and is popular with all the staff there. Paul said, "I am loving working there."
 
In Life Skills – Making Snacks, Jordan, Kelsey and Rachel have been developing their independence skills by practicing pouring water from a kettle safely and preparing simple meals.

The focus this week in Music was “ Vibrations. “ Groups 1 and 2 explored the tuning forks and the cymbal, and saw how sound travels using the ping pong ball while groups 3 and 4 had some ‘gong therapy’ where student’s were surrounded by vibrations.

In PSHE students have worked on body awareness activities. Patrick kindly volunteered to be our model and lay very still as he was drawn around.

KS4

SEB have been looking at native Americans this week, they made some medallions and head-dresses to look the part before we took part in a native American dance.
 
SSC organised a bring and buy sale to raise funds for Bleakholt Animal Sancutary. Lots of people brought things in for them to sell and the students did such a good job of selling that they managed to raise £80. They are going to try and make it to £100 by raffling a teddy and an Easter Egg at 50p per ticket. If you would like a ticket please send in your money marked SSC raffle.
 
KS3

In Design Technology Year 8/9 Green students have been using the Superstrucs construction kits to make some models of space vehicles. Katlin made a landing craft and Farhaz made a space ship. The models were out of this world.
 
In Design Technology Year 7 Blue students have been using the K’nex educational kits to investigate models involving pulleys. Alex and Lyndon had a go a building a model of a crane similar to the type the Egyptians used to make their pyramids and Noah and George built an Egyptian sailing boat called a Felucca with a working sail that raised up. Engineers of the future.
 
Students have been practicing their dancing moves ready for their performance. They have been learning moves to a piece of music called crystalize and will be performing to parent in the show on the 22 March. All are welcome.
