Protest outside the Town Hall

Protestors gathered outside the Town Hall this evening (Wednesday 24 February) to stand against the recently-announced council tax increase.

The protesters, organised by Momentum, gathered at the front entrance ahead of the council’s Budget Fixing Meeting which was set to approve the proposed numbers and confirm official budget figures.

As previously reported by Rochdale Online, the increase is 3.6%.

A spokesperson for Momentum said: “Momentum lobbied outside the Town Hall to express our concerns over the Council implementing the Tory cuts of £37m to services in Rochdale."

Councillor Dalaat Ali, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community
said: “In these very difficult circumstances I think that the Cabinet has done well with the budget this year and actually I am proud of it.”

Cabinet Member for Finance, Councillor Allen Brett said: “The Labour Group voted unanimously for the budget. There have been some minor amendments.”
