Date published: 25 January 2018

Heybrook Primary School are the champions of IPLCN 5-a-side football tournament.

The event hosted 12 local primary schools: Heybrook, Hamer, St Andrews, Spotland, Springside, Marland Hill, Greenbank, Moorhouse, Brimrod, Lower Place, Belfield and Stanley Road.

In the first group game, Heybrook were up against Lowerplace. After a nervy start, they dominated possession and won the game 5-0.

In the next two group games Heybrook beat Belfield 7-0 and Stanley Road 6-0.

After scoring 18 goals and conceding zero, Heybrook finished as winners of their group.

They were then drawn against Hamer and beat their opponents 5-1.

The final was a repeat of last year, with Heybrook facing Marland Hill.

Heybrook  took the lead after just two minutes with a well-worked team goal. Marland got back into the game almost immediately with an excellent strike.

Despite having countless attempts on goal, Heywood could not find a way past the Marland keeper.

The final whistle blew, and the game was decided on a penalty shoot-out - Heybrook  winning 6-5 to become champions.

Speaking after the tournament, Mr Hussain said: “Here at Heybrook, we have been focusing on team spirit, working hard for each other and just enjoying yourselves.

“Winning is always good, but doing so with the togetherness we have is an amazing feeling.”
