Transformation of the Carnegie Library in Castleton continues

The old Carnegie Library, Castleton 'dome' being refitted

The transformation continues for the old Carnegie Library in Castleton, recent improvements to the exterior include a new roof and a dome.

The Friends of Carnegie Castleton said: “The work done by the owner Nick Crewe and his ‘lads’ is taking shape. Alas it is estimated that the inside of the building will take 12 months to ‘dry out’.

“The work to enable True Serenity, of Blue Pits Mill, who will be the tenants, will continue and the plans to provide Castleton with a heritage centre it can be proud of will proceed over the coming year.

“The Friends of Carnegie Castleton wish to thank all our supporters and contributors to our fund which will be used to make the Carnegie a community asset.

“The dome is a mystery to all of us and if anyone from the local area can give us information of when the dome was removed, concealed, please let us know.

“The basement is a very sad place to behold.

“The workmen have removed bags and bags full of rubbish and debris from the drains behind the old toilets, and they have noticed that when the accessible ramp was put in many years ago the contractors did not do the preparation work necessary, to make it all water tight which is another reason rainwater has poured down the internal walls into the basement flooding it to a dangerous level.”
