Louise Butterworth - celebrating 50 years in the jewellery trade with sale

Date published: 25 September 2014

Louise Butterworth is celebrating entering her 50th year in the jewellery trade with a large sale, both in-store and on-line.

Having been in their Drake Street premises since 1903 Butterworths is the oldest established retailer in the town centre and was awarded a Blue Plaque by Rochdale Council in 2013.

Commenting on her long career Louise says: "One of the best things is to have been involved with our customers at some of the most important moments in their lives, in many cases I have seen their children grow up and become customers in turn and have built up lifetime relationships and friendships with so many people.

"Some of our customers are from families who have supported us through two world wars, depressions and recessions.

"Above all, I consider myself to have be very fortunate indeed that not only what started as a childhood passion is still undiminished but that I have been able to earn my living by it.

"I still experience the same thrill at seeing an unusual or very fine gem as I did when first shown a rare and very fine pink diamond by my father in the 1950s."

With no plans to retire, it is expected the sale will run for a few more weeks.

After that Louise will continue on Drake Street concentrating on valuations, repairs and on-line retailing.
