Newhouse Academy opens its doors for an Open Evening

Date published: 22 September 2022

Newhouse Academy, in Heywood, is offering the families of prospective students an opportunity to come and see the school with an open evening event on Thursday 6th October 2022 from 6pm.

As part of Hollingworth Learning Trust, they are committed to providing opportunities for all students, coupled with the determination to ensure they all achieve their desired destinations after Year 11 when they leave.

Mr Alex Burnham, Headteacher of Newhouse Academy, spoke of his role, saying: “I feel honoured to lead the academy forward through these exciting times and it is a privilege to serve our students and our community.

“Along with academy values of Aspiration, Integrity and Respect, we are embedding an ‘Our People’ culture through everything we do and our high expectations of both students and staff are bearing fruit.

“We are delighted to have been the best attended secondary school in the borough in 2021/22, something we plan to emulate during this coming academic year.

“GCSE examination results for 2022 showed improvement across the board and the number of students achieving a 5+ in English and maths increased by 12% whilst those achieving a 5+ in science increased by 11%. GCSE PE at grade 5+ was at 93% and photography at 73%.

“A 100% pass rate was also achieved in music, dance and performing arts.

“We will not be complacent, and will be relentless in our pursuit of securing strong futures for all students of Newhouse Academy.”

The staff at Newhouse Academy are encouraged to be imaginative and creative in the classroom, to deliver motivational and inspiring lessons. They believe that all students, regardless of starting points, should be given the opportunity to achieve their goals in education.

This mind-set is placed at the heart of teaching and learning and the curriculum enables students to develop both personally and academically. This approach encourages all students to see challenges as opportunities to flourish.

The academy nurtures strong links between school and home to support students to gain the most from their education.

The academy is about to embark on a £20 million build that will see:

  • a suite of new science laboratories
  • brand new design technology classrooms including engineering and construction
  • new classrooms for students with SEN
  • new drama, music and dance rooms
  • a new sports centre, fitness room and all weather pitch
  • new canteen

All of this will ensure the Academy is offering students a broad curriculum of subjects to choose from.

The school also offers a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities on a daily basis. Students can get involved in sports teams and clubs, book clubs, debating, performing arts activities, the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and much, much more. The opportunity to participate in trips and visits, including residential and overseas adventures is also available.
