Obituary: Kenneth Schofield

Kenneth Schofield died at the age of 86 on 6 February.

Ken, who was born in Rochdale, grew up during the war and served in the Royal Artillery before becoming a surveyor. He also worked in construction at Huddersfield Polytechnic.

He then moved to Hastings in 1966 with his family to take up a position as a construction lecturer at the Hastings College of Further Education.

Ken was often described as a “dedicated and skilled” teacher by those around him. He quickly rose through the ranks of his job and became an award winning principal lecturer who was very popular with his students.

Ken was also a loving husband to wife Freda. The two met at a dance in Rochdale Town Hall and married in 1952. After getting married, the couple moved to Hastings in the 1960s where they raised their son Keith. The couple were married for 54 years.

After Ken retired from his much loved position at Hastings College, the couple moved to Battle, where Ken joined the Hastings Opera.

Ken and Freda then worked together in Battle Antiques for 15 years. The couple enjoyed the friendly community of the town that was often presented to them whilst working at Battle Antiques.

After Freda died in 2006, Ken remained living in Battle and spent his time volunteering at Battle Museum.

A funeral service was held for family and friends at Hastings Crematorium on Wednesday 19 February.
