Poppies Florist celebrates 25 years

Date published: 04 March 2014

Poppies Florist is celebrating 25 years since their doors opened to the general public. The florist, which is located on Whitworth Road, opened in 1989.

Owner, Krystyna Hammer said: “We have helped celebrate a lot of occasions of the past 25 years. People who got married 25 years ago are now celebrating their children getting married so it is nice to be part of families and generations of families after all of this time.”

Krystyna always wanted to own her own florist and has spent the past 25 years living out her dream. She said: “This is something I always wanted to do. I always wanted a flower shop and it is nice to be doing something that I have always wanted to do.”

The florist has spent the last 25 years in the same location on Whitworth Road, which was decided on by Krystyna because of her local roots. She said: “I like it here because it is local and I grew up around here and went to school around here and I don’t live too far from here now, so I always liked this as a location.”

Krystyna has many fond memories from the past 25 years but when asked what memories she had, the first that jumped to mind was when a shop wall fell down. Kyrstyna said: “The whole of the side wall came down one day when there was bad weather so that is something to remember.”

Krystyna is thinking of a few ways to mark the occasion. She said: “I’m not too sure yet what to do to mark the anniversary. I was thinking of maybe doing a competition or something but I think I am going to get Mothers Day out of the way first and then decide on what to do.”

After celebrating 25 years, Krystyna hopes to still be around for a few more years. She added: “We are looking at maybe doing a refit at the end of the year and are just looking at keeping things going. I don’t think I'll be here another 25 years but hopefully we’ll be around for a little while longer.”
