Clubbing together to crack the code

Date published: 11 April 2013

For many companies in the digital sector, one of the biggest issues they are facing is the shortage of people with coding skills. This is one of the problems the Chamber is looking to address in the short term with some of the Employer Ownership of Skills funding we have received. In the longer term though, the answer has to be getting more people interested in learning to code. To this end the Chamber has recently started to work on a campaign to bring businesses and primary schools together to establish Code Clubs.

Letter of the Law

The Chamber is working with legal practices across Greater Manchester to drive forward the development of skills for legal professionals. To launch this venture, the Chamber is bringing together law firms and headteachers to discuss joint investment strategies which will help to create the skilled workforce of the future. The event takes place on 24 April at Manchester Metropolitan University and is open to law firms across Greater Manchester.

From Learning to Earning

Making the leap from education to employment can be tough for many young people, but employers can help smooth the transition with the launch of a new Traineeship scheme. These structured programmes combine work experience with essential literacy and numeracy skills and to tell us more, we’ll be welcoming the Rt Hon Matthew Hancock MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Skills, to an event on 24 April.

It’s a Date

The Chamber will be at the Linen Restaurant at Manchester 235 Casino for the next Women in Business event on 25 April, where Susan Williams, Executive Director at Atlantic Gateway, will be welcomed. Susan is an inspiring speaker, and will be talking us through her journey from politics in Greater Manchester to her current role bringing jobs and growth to our region. LinkedIn expert, Andy Preston, will be giving top tips for online networking.

Engineering the Future

Following the success of last year’s Engineering and Manufacturing Sector Conference, the Chamber is holding another one. Taking place on 23 April at Salford City Stadium, there will be a number of guest speakers, including Mike Blackburn, Chairman of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership. There will also be an opportunity to set up a trade stand at the event, plus a limited number of delegates will be able to take a tour around the Cargill factory on Trafford Park.
