The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale have officially opened a new barbeque restaurant.

The Olive Tree, on Yorkshire Street, specialises in barbeque and grill food and hopes to promote healthy eating in Rochdale.

The Mayor, Councillor Alan Godson and Mayoress Gillian Brown, joined The Olive Tree team for the opening event and cut a ribbon outside the premises to mark the opening.

The site was previously occupied by the Suhag Spice Lounge and owner Jilad Miah is a partner in The Olive Tree. He said: “This is a completely new concept. I was looking for a new challenge and these guys approached me to do something new.”

Mohammad Arshad Ali, added: “We have been working closely with Link4Life and have found that the increase in obesity over the past five or six years has shot up.

“We wanted to do something practical and offer a healthy alternative, we all know that take away is convenient for people with busy lives -but we are offering fresh and healthy food.

Mr Ali concluded: “We want to cater for every taste. We have taken the best barbeque food from around the world and brought it together.”

Mayor Godson, said: “I think it looks really good; they have gone to a lot of trouble. I think it will do well and I really hope it does.”
