Apprentice helps drive business forward

Date published: 06 April 2011

An apprentice from Rochdale has landed himself a role in his dream job – and is helping to drive a local business forward at the same time.

Andrew Kelly 18, attended Balderstone Technology College before studying at Hopwood Hall College where he completed a Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repar.

Mr Kelly wanted to continue his studies whilst getting paid work experience at the same time. He has always wanted to work with motors and his father and grandfather were both mechanics.

With the help of the college Mr Kelly got an interview at Unique LPG Systems who were looking to expand by employing an apprentice. Following a successful interview Mr Kelly was offered a position at Unique.

He now studies for one day a week at Hopwood Hall College and then works at the company’s garage on Ings Lane Rochdale for the rest of the week.

Speaking about the apprenticeship Mr Kelly said: “It’s really good to get qualifications whilst at the same time obtain experience that proves I can actually do the work. My job is going really well and I am particularly happy that I have learnt how to fit LPG. I’m hoping to pass my LPG certificate this year,”

So what does the future hold for Mr Kelly? Well at the moment he is very happy in his new role, but one day in the future he thinks he may even follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and go into business himself with some of his college friends.
