Rochdale Best Bar None

Date published: 03 August 2009

Town Centre Management is again running the Best Bar None scheme to judge the bars, clubs and pubs in the town centre as part of the Rochdale Town Centre Business Awards 2009.

The UK-wide scheme, which is backed by the Home Office and BII, is aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol-licensed premises with the ultimate intention of offering and maintaining a safer, more welcoming, attractive and lively drinking experience.

Debbie O’Brien, Rochdale Town Centre Manager said: “The Best Bar None scheme really is an opportunity for local premises to really show what sort of venues they are running. Town centres generally get bad PR from the media however this scheme is designed to prove just how responsible they are and how they value your safety as much as your custom. Bars who take part in the scheme show that they are happy for all their procedures to be viewed transparently by independent assessors. What better way to sell yourself to the general public?”

The following Rochdale town centre venues have volunteered to be part of the Best Bar None scheme 2009/10 in order gain accreditation:

  • Bar 5
  • The Baum
  • Blue Lounge
  • Honey
  • Kandy Club
  • Koko
  • Mango
  • Pacific
  • The Regal Moon
  • The Roebuck

Over the last few weeks, Best Bar None assessors visited these premises and conducted interviews to test that they meet all 21 points of the criteria. The venues that fulfil all the Best Bar None criteria are accredited and given a plaque to display outside the venue. This will reassure customers that they are entering safe and responsible premises.

There are 3 awards up for grabs, which will be announced and presented at the Rochdale Town Centre Business Awards on 4 September:

  • Best Bar None - Pub Category sponsored by Rochdale Safer Communities Partnership
  • Best Bar None - Bar/Club Category sponsored by Rochdale Safer Communities Partnership
  • Best Bar None - Overall sponsored by RMBC Licensing

Director of Mango in the town centre, Martyn Turner, commented: "Best Bar None provides an excellent opportunity for licensees to demonstrate to customers that they are in a professionally operated venue that is doing it's upmost to offer a safer environment and enjoyable social event. It is also an opportunity for positive dialogue between Licensing, Police and other agencies, and we are of course delighted Mango won best bar and best overall venue 2008/9.
