New private ultrasound scan clinic opens in Castleton

The opening of Medical Scans Limited at Blue Pit Mill
A new independent clinic offering diagnostic ultrasounds was officially opened by Mayor Billy Sheerin on Thursday 22 August.
Located at Blue Pit Mill, Castleton, Medical Scans Limited is an independent private provider of diagnostic ultrasound scans for obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal, vascular and musculoskeletal issues.
The principal lead sonographer is Samina Syed-Afzal, Managing Director of Medical Scans Limited, who qualified in ultrasound in 1992 and obtained her master’s degree in 1994.
Since then, she has worked in the NHS and in community settings performing diagnostic ultrasound scans and is a registered member of the Health Professions Council.
Samina said: “We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor Billy Sheerin to Medical Scans’ clinic for the formal opening.
“A sympathetically renovated building like Blue Pit Mill was a positive choice, offering an excellent strategic location to a motorway and good space for free car parking.
“We offer a range of ultrasound examinations which can assess the integrity of tendons and muscles and bony cortical surfaces. Excess fluid or torn ligaments can often be imaged, and ruptured tendons can be assessed.
“If people want to self-refer or have a scan and charge the costs back to their private insurers, they have this option.”
She continued: “We hope to engage with multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals to hold collaborative study days, and we will be hoping to employ suitable local staff.
“We would also like to encourage more young people to learn about medical imaging as a scientific career choice thereby closing the skills gap in these areas.”
Medical Scans is also hosting a taster day on Sunday (1 September) for students looking at a career in healthcare.
A qualified doctor, nurse, midwife, sonographer and radiographer will be giving demonstrations and information about their chosen professions.
