A new heritage trail celebrating the long and proud history of Middleton is launching this September.
Covering 24 sites, each with their own fascinating story, you can do the trail in one go or follow one of three shorter routes. As part of the national Heritage Open Days celebration, guided walks of these trails will be taking place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September.
Saturday 14 September
10.30am to 12.30pm – Red Route (meet at the car park by St Leonard’s Church, St Leonard’s Square, M24 6DF) to walk the area known as ‘The Golden Cluster’.
This walk will take you around Middleton’s Golden Cluster of Architecture and History. Discover Middleton’s oldest church, as well as architectural gems designed by eminent Middleton architect Edgar Wood. Find out more about the town’s links to the Jacobite rebellion and the Peterloo Massacre.
2pm to 4pm – Green Route (meet at Moonraker Sculpture in Market Place) to walk Manchester Old Road and Alkrington Woods
Join us for this guided walk, which will take you from Middleton town centre, through Middleton’s parks and green spaces. You will also discover beautiful late 19th century suburbs and stunning Palladian architecture.
Sunday 15 September

In addition to the highlights of the golden cluster (outlined above), this route will take you around the Middleton’s mills and town centre. Discover Middleton’s social history and what it would have been like to live and work in the town during the industrial revolution.

Helpful information
All the walks involve some hills, steps and off-road areas.
Accessible toilets are available at Middleton Library (Saturday only), Middleton Arena and Middleton Shopping Centre.
