Heritage Open Days - Long Street Methodist Church and School

08 September 2024

Sunday 08 September 2024
1pm - 4pm

Long Street Methodist Church and School
97 Long Street
Middleton
M24 6UN

Details:

One of Middleton's 'Golden Cluster' of historic buildings, this Arts and Crafts inspired church and former schoolrooms is a masterpiece designed by Edgar Wood (1860-1935).

Long Street Methodist Church and Schools were built in 1899. It is an outstanding Grade II* listed building incorporating Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and modern stylistic elements into a magnificent whole. The writers of the latest Pevsner guide describe the interior of the church as a 'knockout', and the adjacent school is pure Arts and Crafts with a lovely 'outdoor room' garden accessed through an Art Nouveau gateway topped by a cubic modern sculpture.

New for 2024, every open day will have an exhibition of paintings 'Edgar Wood and his contemporaries' plus work by local artists. In addition, on Wednesday 11th museum staff from Touchstones will bring exhibits from their collection of Local History artefacts. On Sat. 14th. Touchstones 'Collections on Tour' will be in residence.
