A new community interest company at SBG Rochdale is aiming to help people recover from alcohol and substance misuse.
Roll to Recovery aims to empower people by teaching the art of submission grappling to drive meaningful and powerful physical and psychological changes.
The group was founded by Michael Weetman, and sessions will take place at SBG Rochdale.
Michael said: “We are running a beginners’ intake in the Christmas-New Year period as it is specifically a difficult time for guys in recovery.
“Grappling played a huge part in my own recovery from alcoholism, and I wanted to give back what was freely given to me.
“The lessons we learn in recovery mirror those of grappling. Humility, acceptance and trust in our training partners along a belief in something greater than ourselves. This project was designed to reunite people with the fundamental human needs, everything we lost when we were drinking/using.
“Everything we practise on the mats can be directly linked and used again in the outside world, we begin to live ourselves into new ways of thinking and our members are taking bold new steps into a life free of addiction.”
