Boxing: Hamer boxer wins in Doncaster

Date published: 14 February 2019

11-year-old Ben Braddock, from Hamer Boxing Club, travelled to Parklands Social Club, Doncaster to meet Kian Hamilton of Doncaster Plant Boxing Club on Saturday, 9 February.

From the sound of the very first bell the home town boxer, Kian Hamilton, gained the crowd's full support when he stormed out of his corner to take the fight to the Hamer boxer and box up close with fast punches to the body and head.

Braddock stayed cool and boxed to instructions, which was to keep his opponent at distance and use his height and reach advantage to pick Hamilton off with his jab.

As the round progressed the Doncaster boxer began to settle down a little, which gave Braddock time to set his feet and unload one two combinations, which began to connect.

Hamilton continued to force the fight but the punches the Hamer boxer was throwing were beginning to take effect and at one-point Braddock trapped Hamilton in his own corner and landed three continuous power punches to the chin to take the round.

Hamilton rushed out again at the start of round two, but this time Braddock matched him with solid punches, and he rocked his opponent with a power punch to the head.

It was at this point that Hamilton began to back off, which allowed Braddock time to find his distance and he began landing stiff one two combinations to the head.

The Doncaster boxer was tiring and showing signs of distress and he began to throw swinging punches which continued to miss as Braddock landed his straight one twos.

By now Braddock was in total control, as he continued to presser Hamilton, who was moving from corner to corner in anguish.

Half way through the round Hamilton backed into his own corner once again and Braddock followed him to unload continuous punches to the head, which forced the coach from the home town to throw in the towel to protect his boxer from further punishment and give the Hamer youngster the victory via a stoppage win.

Hamer coach Steven Connellan said: "Ben boxed clever and to instructions which was pleasing to see.

“The young lad is still a work in progress and if he continues to listen and learn in the gym then who knows what success he might gain.”
