Cricket: Norden defeated Colne away

Date published: 06 August 2018

Norden moved a match closer to qualifying for the top flight in 2019 when they defeated Colne in an away JW Lees Lancashire League match on Saturday.

Stags took first knock and lost leading run-scorer Josh Tolley and Dan Buckley with only six on the board.

But Harvey Fitton led a recovery, first with Dominic Humphreys who was run out for 12, then Jake Sandham who hit 34 before falling to a leg before decision, and Greg Butterworth who scored 12.

At 119 for four Stags had looked set for a decent total, but three wickets, including that of Butterworth, fell on that score. Nick Brierley was bowled, and Hashum Malik was trapped leg before.

Fitton was still there, but on 128 he was out, one short of a half century.

The tail added runs, Joe Humphreys scoring nine of them, and Norden finished on 147.

Unluckiest was Thomas Booth who slipped and was run out.

Colne obviously fancied their chances, but at 21 for four it had become an uphill task for them.

Sandham was first to strike when he had Procter caught behind by Nick Brierley, then Spokes was leg before to Malik.

Home professional James Price didn’t hang around, he was bowled by Malik without scoring, then Fitton took a brilliant catch to dismiss Kegg and provide Sandham with a second wicket.

The middle order tried to pull Colne round, but Holt was caught behind for eight, Walton went the same way for 30, and Hakin was victim of a return catch by Greg Butterworth whose spin brought him a return of five for 33.

Liaqat scored an unbeaten 26, off 86 deliveries faced, and Bradshaw scored 15, but the end finally came in the 42nd over with Colne all out for 114.
