Rugby League: Rochdale Mayfield 34 - 35 Myton Warriors

Date published: 26 June 2017

Mayfield put in a poor performance at home against a Myton Warriors team that completed the double over the local side.

Mayfield started off well and in the first quarter raced into a 22 -0 lead, with good ball movement that shocked the visitors, but they still showed a lack in concentration that would later cost them dearly.

Indicative of this was Matty Ashton's interception try where he had a clear run to the line, yet still put the ball down 20 metres to the right, instead of under the posts. Chris Hough duly missed the conversion and Myton took this, and other small mercies, to hang-on in the game.

Mayfield became too lackadaisical - dropping the ball on exit and giving penalties when in possession, and when Jack Sampson inexplicably decided to lose his cool to spend 10 minutes in the sin-bin Myton took full advantage. Their fleet-footed stand-off ripped holes in the Mayfield defence time and time again, to take Myton back to 22-20 at half time.

Mayfield scored first in the second half through Callum Marriott but hadn't learnt their lesson, and with older heads Sam Butterworth and Chris Hough off the field, again gave away possession time after time. Myton again took advantage charged into a 35-28 lead.

Aiden Gleeson had spent much of the game on the sideline, but his return to action saw him barge over for a try that brought Mayfield back to just a point behind.

In the dying moments, Mayfield had chances but lacked the composure to convert them and Myton held on for the points.

Over in Bury, a young Mayfield A team produced a display of attacking rugby and solid defence to maintain their top of the league position, in a 12-52 victory over Bury Broncos.
