Date published: 20 May 2017

Sacred Heart Football Club have made history again by being the first Rochdale team to bring home the Gilgryst Cup following the final against AFC Monton on Friday 12 May.

At the start of May, the team became the first Rochdale team in history to become champions of the Manchester Football League Premier Division.

They had hoped to match their historical feats again by becoming the first Rochdale team to win the Gilgryst Cup, and after a tense match, Ryan Burgess scored in the 93rd minute of the game, the last kick of the season, to achieve that dream.

First team manager Danny McWilliam said: “In the last half an hour, I couldn’t see it happening. Then we scored and it was quite epic.

“What I’ve witnessed in the last two weeks, what we’ve achieved is just out of this world. Thinking back now, I’m like ‘how did that happen’.

“I’m still lost for words. The lads are exceptional and I knew they were good enough to make it happen, and they’re such a young side, it’s just unbelievable.

“All the support and kind words we’ve had have been amazing, and it’s been nice for the older generation who didn’t think they’d see this. They’ve done Rochdale very proud and it shows there’s a lot of talent.

“We knew we’d be facing a tough team and we’ve shown we’re not an easy pushover. To grind a result of one-nil in the 93rd minute in front of 400 spectators all celebrating, it’s one of the best feelings in your career.

“We're grateful to our kit sponsors BB Textiles and club tracksuit sponsors Orchard Rock Training for their support this season.”
